“I Am Sick.. So I Left”
Md. Shahabuddin Chuppu has resigned from the post of President of Bangladesh, citing illness.
গুরুতর শারীরিক অসুস্থতার কারণ দেখিয়ে বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রপতির পদ থেকে পদত্যাগ করেছেন মোঃ সাহাবুদ্দিন চুপ্পু। শুক্রবার (২৪ জুলাই) জাতীয় সংসদের স্পিকার মেজর (অব.) হাফিজ উদ্দিন আহমেদ-এর নিকট তিনি আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে পদত্যাগপত্র জমা দেন। বঙ্গভবন থেকে রাষ্ট্রপতির প্রেস সচিব মোঃ সরওয়ার আলম স্বাক্ষরিত এক সংবাদ বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে এই তথ্য নিশ্চিত করা হয়েছে।
Md. Shahabuddin Chuppu has resigned from the post of President of Bangladesh, citing serious physical illness. He formally submitted his resignation to Speaker of the National Assembly Major (retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed on Friday (July 24). This information was confirmed in a press release signed by the President’s Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam from Bangabhaban.
Shahabuddin Chuppu said in his letter that he resigned in accordance with the provisions of Article 50(3) of the Constitution. The press release said that in his resignation letter sent to the Speaker, the President has given details of his physical condition. In the letter, he mentioned, “I am seriously ill. I am suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney complications. I have undergone bypass surgery on my heart.”
He further wrote, stating that he was recently diagnosed with a neurological disease called ‘autonomic neuropathy’ in a health check-up, “Due to this disease, I sometimes lose consciousness for a moment. Due to the physical and mental incapacity due to the outbreak of diseases, it is not possible for me to perform the duties of an important constitutional post like the President. I need long-term treatment.”
Speaker to serve as Acting President
To fill the constitutional void resulting from the resignation of the President, Speaker of the National Assembly Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram) will serve as the President.
According to Article 54 of the Constitution of Bangladesh, the Speaker will assume the duties of the President until a new President is elected and formally assumes office, Bangabhaban said.
Incidentally, Md. Sahabuddin was sworn in as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023.
